Post a reply || Back to Eagles Landing - Message Board Re: My Experience
Message: As it states from the name I am an "employee" at Eagles Landing. Not so much an employee as family, I have been the disgruntled shuttle driver for nearly 10 years, and been involved with sturgis since '89. Yeah I know I am not a "happy" driver but would you be, its no excuse just the way I feel about Sturgis in general. I can tell you I personally dont make my years wages in that week nor do any of the "employees". We all try hard to maintain a level of "happy" In fact this particular year we were short the usual staff that we are all used to. I have joked for years that an inside view of the operations would make a great documentary. The typical day for me starts around 7 or 8 where I get to go out and either pump porta potties or try to address other issues that may come up. Then at 2 in the after noon I start driving and I finish up 12 hours later and hit the bed about 3 or so after I wind down a bit, its the only chance I get to drink a beer or two plus I usually need it to sleep very well. Some of us put in many more hours some less but we are all sleep deprived, tired of burgers, and just restless in general. Again, I am not trying to make excuses but it is what it is. Most of us operate on 4-6 broken hours of sleep (by broken I mean up 3-4 hours a night followed by a short nap if possible) Many people say why dont you just hire more people, simply put, the overhead involved and the actual work required pretty much make it a very undesireable employment. All but a couple of us have to pay our way to get there and we all drive close to 4 hours and we have to pay our way back. Some of us dont have paid vacations, I thankfully do. To sum it up, if it werent family, you most likely would never seem me anywhere near a campground EVER. And as a side note, I will agree with you that showers need work, its not a money issue its an issue where we test and retest but we cant simulate a full campground or the water demands that creates. We sat down mid week and brain stormed the issue once again. Its easy to make a shower house get good pressure and temp to one head or to 25 heads but to get a mixture from one extreme to the other is a challenge that we try to address sometimes to success sometimes to failure but we try. The owner tries very hard to make the campgound a place that is resonable and comfortable and nearly every time to his monitary detriment. I have never heard him say we can make more money if we do this, but I have heard him say we need to let the vacationers have a good time without spending to much. The cost of everything effects a campground. I can honestly say that if he could stay in business selling beer at $.25 a can he would do it in a heartbeat. Replies to this post
